Comments: The first time i heard "No Myth" it gave me goosebumps and made me shiver. Now if i hear a song and it gives me
both of those it has to be a great song. Then when i saw the music video for "No Myth" i had to get that cd. Thank you Michael for such intelligent music. Tom you have a great site. :)

Comments: Michael penn's music is real and the words are tangible.. Some how it brings me solace in the constant muttering of everyday life.. Plus how many Cd's can you say that you listen to from start to finish??? All of his music (so far)I've never pressed the skip button....so...there you go!!

Favorite song(s) from Resigned ---Try: ON
Out of My Hands, All That That Implies, Selfish, Figment, Comfort
Favorite line(s) (from "Out of My Hands"): "Every conclusion reached is out to you"
Comments: All of these songs have a serene melodic sense about them, yet maintain a tuneful unpredictability. I find Michael Penn's music appealing particularly because he blends a lot of different riffs & melodies together nicely at different speeds within the same song, which is very difficult to do, in my opinion (being the novice guitarist I am). That's what separates his music from a lot of the other stuff out there. I enjoyed the site, may be you can expand the transcriptions.

Favorite line(s) (from "Half Harvest"): "What makes you think that just cause you dress bright means that you shine?"
Comments: Michael Penn is a powerful, inspired songwriter. I've felt a personal connection with his lyrics since the begning. As a matter of fact, I've often thought March should be subtiltled "for Dave", he expressed my thoughts so amazingly.

Comments: I agree with many of the thoughts expressed here. MP is definitely the most underrated songwriter of our generation.
His innovative work with melody and verse should be recognized for the genius it is compared to the sickening "Backstreet" idiots and clones we
must live with in our faces 24-7. I've been trying to turn other musicians and producers I work with on to his style and especially his
Brendan O'Brian produces material. It's the best "rock-band" stuff I've heard.

Favorite line(s) (from "Me Around"): The fire this whole town can see is me alight in effigy. I suppose baby don't want me around.
Comments: I had heard "No Myth" when it was popular, and liked it. When I saw the CD in a used CD store in 1990 or so, I decided to listen to it to see if I'd like anything else on there. And, well, I bought the CD.
I saw him at Bumbershoot in 1997 in Seattle on a fluke; I had no idea he was going to be there, I was just there on vacation. I wish he had been on longer though!
A friend who is also a Michael Penn fan loaned me his Elliott Smith CD. It's pretty good, I think many Michael Penn fans would like it!

Comments: Ever since "March" was released and I slipped that c.d. into my stereo, it has hardly ever seen the light of day. Other albums came and went but that one album still remains. Penn's lyrics are so witty, intelligent and flexible, you can't possibly grow tired of listening to them!

Comments: "Long Way Down" was the first
song I ever heard by Michael Penn, and it really tugged at my heartstings in an
eerie sort of way. I'm normally a techno-freak, so slower music doesn't
generally interest me much, but there's something about Michael Penn's music that
keeps me running back for more. I have listened to his tapes SOOO many times,
but I have never gotten tired of it, which is a lot more than I can say about
most other music. A rare find indeed.

Comments: As a long time enthusiast of
Joan Armatrading's work, I can
understand the frustration of those who think MP should get
more airplay and attention, but word-of-mouth artists seem
more worthwhile. Isn't it wonderful when a friend tells
someone that they heard some great songs at your place, and
had to go buy the album? Then they play a few songs for
someone else, and so it goes. I feel like a member of a
secret club, and if we say the password to enough people,
the astounding MP will get his due. Just remember, we got
here first.

Comments: My first exposure to Michael
was sitting next to some guy on an aeroplane who was listening to "March". I
don't know what else to say, everyone reading this knows how great a musician and
lyricist Michael is. To me it's no surprise he hasn't attained mainstream
success, his music is too thoughtful and insightful for the mainstream public to
digest. I'll tell you what I really want, all of his videos! The only ones I've
ever seen were "No Myth"(boy, that was a long time ago) and "Try" (saw that once
last summer real late at night on M2). It really bothers me because I didn't get
to tape either and they are great videos! I think the secret to getting a video
shown more than once involves a fish-eye lens and "Puffy"Combs (by saying this I
am of course not suggesting this as an acceptable compromise). Another thing, I
LOVE ALL OF MP'S SONGS; the choices above just happen to be my favourites at the
moment, they tend to go in cycles. That's my measure of an album: Am I always in
the mood to listen to it? To date there are only two or three bands beside MP
that live up to that criterion. [I hope all this isn't too bloody disjointed.]

Comments: i really think these are some
of the most clever lines he has written. although, there is not a song, lyric or
line that I do not like. I have been a pennamaniac since 1990 when i first heard
"no myth" michael is the first new artist that i have ever brought. i am very
choosy and only will buy established artist. i am glad i broke my rule.

Comments: Hi!
I've been tracing Michael Penn for over 4 years now...
One day I just left the VHS on recording a video on Mtv, but I forgot all about
it, and I recorded a few other videos by mistake as well.
Well, one of these "bonus" videos was Penn's 'Look What The Cat Drug In'.
And I never saw it on Mtv again!!!!!!!!
It's like I would turn on the TV waiting to see it at least once more, 'live',
not recorded...
And nothing....
I've precticaly called every radio station to ask for the song... And nothing...
And it wasn't just the enchanting music and the spellcasting lyrics, it was the
beauty of the definition of fabrics and textures...
It was the rich portay of ideas and deliciously well combined colors and depths
in the video.
I sincerely fell madly in love with Michael Penn's style and class!!!

EILEEN RYAN AND LEO PENN SHOULD HAVE THEIR DNA ANALYZED TO FIGURE OUT WHY THEY
HAVE SUCH TALENTED OFFSPRING, AND EVERYONE ELSE GIVES BIRTH TO CHAMPIONS OF
MEDIOCRITY. SECONDLY, RADIO PROGRAMMERS SHOULD HAVE THEIR BRAINS ANALYZED. WHY
CAN'T THIS GENIUS GET AIRPLAY? WHY DOESN'T SONY PUSH HIM THE WAY THEY PUSH THOSE
OTHER TURDS ON THEIR ROSTER? HE IS INCAPABLE OF WRITING A BAD SONG! IT PISSES ME
OFF TO NO END WHEN I THINK OF HIS BACK CATALOG BEING OUT OF PRINT. HIS SONGS ARE
SO GORGEOUSLY LAYERED AND COMPLEX THEY GET BETTER AND BETTER W/ EACH LISTEN, BUT
I GUESS THAT'S TOO MUCH FOR THE TITANIC SOUNDTRACK/ RAY OF LIGHT BUYING PUBLIC TO
UNDERSTAND.I WORK FOR TOWER RECORDS, AND IT WAS MY EXTREME PLEASURE TO DO A GIANT
