Favorite line(s) (from "Evenfall"): "... when the moment comes when I've got nothing left I find I've got it all..."
Comments: On my eighteenth birthday my co-workers got me a Penn State jacket
simply because the word Penn was on it. On my 21st birthday my friends
got for me a car frame that said on the top MICHAEL PENN and on the
bottom MY ROMEO IN BLACK JEANS. It became to be one of my prized
possessions...that is until the day I met him for the third time
and got to take a picture with him. I do not know the technical
aspects about music; I just know what moves me and Michael Penn's music
has done so since the first time I heard "No Myth." Technically I
could go on, but as it says above I don't want to " get carried away."
Thanks for reading!!!

Comments: i'm what you might call a second-hand fan. i was formally introduced to Resigned through my brother. my major influence in choosing my favorites was the guitar work. the actual playing, along with the general sound really peaked my attention. the opening acoustic and the queen-esque solo from "out of my hands" are just plain good.

Favorite line(s) (from "Out of My Hands" & "Long Way Down"): "so come out and check, there's nothing up my sleeve. all the while it's getting harder for you to believe." and "oh, don't look in those eyes, bluer than blue, her rules on the rise."
Comments: i love resigned, and i just recently got free for all, and i haven't yet found march at any of our bootleg stores. i love "out of my hands" because it is the most beautiful song i've heard for a very long time. i also love "long way down..." because it's just great. i think i like the line from it just because it sounds great in the song. also, since good modern rock/pop/whatever you want to call it, is so hard to find, check out these bands (in order of greatness): ben folds five, travis, the seahorses. all are great and you should check them out. thank you

Comments: Long Way Down is probably my favorite. It's just a really catchy song to me. Kind of dark and gloomy, but the chorus is just something else! I love all of Resigned but Try is probably my favorite (I think of it every time I hear Sergei Fedorov's name "In a nutshell, I don't try"). Bunker Hill is another favorite.
Here's the address to my homepage, nothing to do with MP, but I like it anyways (I haven't been able to update it since May thanks to AOL....)

Comments: Hi, GREAT site! I've always liked the songs "No Myth" and "This and That" and also Michael's cover of "weeds" on the Victoria Williams benefit, so one day while paging through a Columbia House catalog full of a bunch of CDs I already owned, I decided to expand my horizons and order "Resigned." The other day it came and all I can say after having listened to it is one of the most unoriginal comments in the world... "WOW!:" But I mean that wow. I have "I can Tell" running through my head right now... all the songs on the album are like that, catchy... usually when people describe someone as "Beatlesque" I wonder why, but not with Michael! I can't wait to play at least 3 of those songs on my radio show tomorrow. (KGHP 89.9 and 104.5 FM in Gig Harbor, WA) That comment about him being grouped with Lennon and McCartney in a perfect world is so true. I CAN'T WAIT to hear the other two albums! Didn't Michael try to act in "Boogie Nights"? I like him better than Sean and Ch!
ris! Well, I'll stop rambling, anyone can feel free to visit my page and sign the guestbook. If you're a fan of Matt Dillon or Kevin Corrigan sign those guestbooks, too! Bye!!

Comments: I may like the video to "Long Way Down" more than the song itself. I have never seen such a video before or since. This one was disturbing; it gave you chills. And yet, you couldn't turn away from it. It's a shame it's been forgotten by the so-called music channels MTV and VH1. If we could ge a copy of it, someone should absolutely post it on the Internet so everyone could enjoy it.

Favorite line(s) (from "Selfish"): it's not conscious be assured and it's not like i haven't heard
Comments: I love Michael Penn, the songs I like the most I think are most appealing because most of them are so darn sexy. I love him being sensitive and sweet and all that but i also like musicians who can show different sides of themselves while still keeping their identity. That probably makes no sense, but those songs just make more sense. This is a great page, i had no idea anyone else felt this way about him.

Favorite line(s): the lyrics from 'by the book', 'try', 'invisible', etc
Comments: MP's the man...It's too bad that crappy "alternative" bands keep ending up on MTV w/ multi million dollar contracts when somebody who is more talented than any Gavin- whoever prettyboy from any one of those seattle wannabes is apparently doomed to be remembered as Madonna's ex-brother in law....what a shame... All of his stuff is good, the new one included, but "free-for-all" made me believe that popular music could be saved.

Comments: Hi. I guess why I'm really writing is cuz I'm looking for a copy of "No Myth" the accoustic version. I first heard the song in the spring on 1990 and thought it was the best song ever recorded. I went out and bought the album only to discover it did not have the accoustic version on it. But I quickly became a Michael Penn fan. I eventually did find a cassette single verson of the accoustic version. Unfortunately about 2 years ago some jerks broke into my car and stole it(along with many other CD's including 2 autographed CD's by Treat Her Right). I have been unsuccessful in locating another copy of it.
Just a little background in my own Penn experiences... I 1st saw him live at the Stone Pony in NJ(great show if any one has a bootleg). He played every song from March and then some. He never came to Connecticut and I was unable to see him again until I was lucky enough to see him in Atlanta this past Sept. opening up for Wilco and S. Crow. Felt bad for Penn since no one was really paying attention to him until Miss Crow came out on stage in a bikini. I felt as though I was the only person there who knew who Michael Penn was.
Anywho, I would really love to get my hands on a copy of that accoustic version of "No myth"(CD if available). Can any one give me any tips at all? I would really appreciate it. Thanks. Please e-mail me at rsvp@technologytomorrow.com again thanks....

Comments: My friend told me about Michael Penn years ago but I didn't listen. Sucks for me! But when I saw him on MTV I ran out to buy Resigned and I was hooked. He has a way with words that few songwriters have, plus he can make his lyrics rhyme which is cool. What can I say, the entire Penn family kicks butt. It's too bad I don't have a computer, I have to go to my friend's house to see all this cool stuff on the internet. In any event it's nice to know that so many people appreciate his wonderful music. Later...

Comments: Actually, I just wanted to report on the show I just saw at the Roxy, LA. Michael played 5 songs: Me Around, Long Way Down, Out of My Hand, Trampoline(a new song), and Brave New World. It was cool. He chatted with fans in the crowd afterwards.

Favorite line(s) (from "Battleroom"): Windows, cover the windows, don't you know the neighbours talk...
Comments: March is such a cool album, but the summit of its mountain has got to be that second verse and the "Lisa's knocking at my open door" melody. Penn's a master of the two-second musical moment (like Neil Finn). Every song of his has one of those moments... almost narcotic moments, really..
I must go hunting for the new album, though I suspect it won't be easy to find where I am..

Favorite line(s) (from "Slipping My Mind"): Wash me up Mama, and give me a suit
Comments: Michael Penn is one of, if not the greatest, songwriters working today. He knows when to be beautiful, and when to be ugly. He knows when to layer on the tracks, and when to strip the song down. He's a true craftsman working in an industry dominated by pre-fab, high-gloss, immature pop stars and rappers. In a perfect world Michael Penn would be appreciated alongside Lennon and McCartney.

Favorite line(s) (from "No Myth"): What if I were Romeo in black jeans? What if I was Heathcliff, it's no myth.
Comments: I consider No Myth to be my heart and soul. I have listened
to it at least 10,000 times. The words are strikingly relevant
to my life. I am a huge Beatles fan, and I think that No Myth
is better than any Beatles song. I guess you can say I'm addicted
to No Myth because I can't go for more than a few hours without
having to listen to it. I even bought a 12-string guitar (because that's
what he uses in No Myth) and taught myself how to play it.

Comments: "March" and "Free For All" are both fine albums - too bad they're out of print. I'd love to see them re-issued.
The only thing disapointing about "Resigned" was that there was no duet with Aimee Mann. And why no cd singles released for "Try?"
Oh yeah, I never got to hear Michael's appearance on
"Loveline" back in June. Anyone who taped it and would be
willing to help me get a copy, please email me. Thanks!

Favorite song(s) from Resigned ---Try, Out of My Hands, Figment
Favorite line(s): "She blocked her eyes and drew the curtains with knots I've got yet to untie."(No Myth) "Maybe she's just looking for someone to dance with." "Leave it for a while. Come back. What would make a smile on you?"(Figment) "I'm pretty sure you were here; lately things tend to disappear."(I Can Tell)
Comments: I wish I had Michael Penn all to myself. I'm sorry, I know it's selfish, but I can't help it. I get jealous when I read other people's comments about having been a fan for so long. March was one of the first tapes I ever bought. I was either in sixth or seventh grade. I remember taking baths and listening to him on my little pink tape player. I feel extremely lucky to have been able to grow up with his music. I have always felt like he was an older brother of mine, giving me advice and sometimes just keeping me company when I needed it. He holds a place in my heart and I'd like to think that maybe there's is a place somewhere in his heart for his little unknown fan in Connecticut named Kate. Thank you.
