Favorite songs from March ---Innocent One, Invisible, Half Harvest
Favorite songs from Free For All ---Long Way Down (Look what the cat drug in), Coal
Favorite line (from "Invisible"): She's there puring coffee watching the time and i sit half amazed that she's pouring mine
Comments: I remember listening to Michael Penn in 8th grade, digging for a dictionary to find out what in the world "wherewithal" meant. For some reason I thought it had something to do with werewolfs. It just amazes me how innovative the instrumentation is on _March_, the drum-machine programming surpasses anything I can think of during 1988, not to mention Patrick Warren's cooky keyboards. In addition to that, Michael Penn has a fantastic pen for writing a great song, and the ability to "pull my heart strings" which always make his recordings a delight.

Favorite songs from March---Innocent One, Brave New World, Cupid's Got a Brand New Gun
Favorite songs from Free For All ---Slipping My Mind, Long Way Down (Look what the cat drug in), Strange Season
Favorite line (from "Innocent One"): "She reminded me of you when you cried...and I didn't mean to make you cry."
Comments: Michael Penn instills something in my heart, rhythm, and soul that I can't describe to anyone. My brother and I would always listen to him when we did anything together. One of my greatest concert achievements was the time I saw Micheal Penn live, on my birthday. It was amazing. He opened with -Cupid- and I smiled. He is truly one of the best poets of our time. I have over 600 cds and he still has the best disc of the bunch. I respect every Penn fan for knowing good music.

  • Name: Mark Lupone
    Date & Time: Tue May 20 15:28:01 EDT 1997
    From: Island Park, NY
Favorite songs from March ---Bedlam Boys, and the rest of March, too
Favorite songs from Free For All ---Free Time, Seen the Doctor, Now We're Even, and the rest of Free For All, too
Favorite line (from "Seen the Doctor"): Mermaid on Pico lifts a fin, demands a towel.
Comments: I can let both of these albums play from beginning to end without having to skip a song (accept for maybe "Evenfall"). It's really hard to pick a favorite but the ones I checked off are usually the ones stuck in my head after the CDs over. Everything is great, the voice, the melodies, the lyrics, the musicianship (The bass playing on Free For All is outstanding). I can't wait for the new one.

Favorite line: can't possibly pick. i mean, look how many songs i picked.
Comments: michael penn makes my heart hurt every time i hear him, but a sweet kind of ache that stays with me for a long time.

  • Name: Jon Borden
    Date & Time: Thu May 8 19:50:12 EDT 1997
    From: Los Angeles, California
Favorite songs from March ---No Myth, Battleroom, Half Harvest, This & That, and the rest of March, too
Favorite songs from Free For All ---Free Time, Drained, Now We're Even, and the rest of Free For All, too
Favorite line (from "Battleroom"): "There will always be a different key, always be a souvenir...but when we're at the door we never pause, it's not because we've got no fear"
Comments: I first heard about Michael Penn on "Fresh Aire", National Public Radio, then had the opportunity to review "March" when it came out for my college newspaper. I fell in love with every song immediately. Went to see Michael at the Wiltern that year, and have seen him multiple times since. Met him out on the street in Ventura one rainy spring night on the 1995 tour. The arrangements, little unexpected dramatic sounds, and fantastic guitar work have kept me as a fan forever.

  • Name: David J. Kolbusz
    Date & Time: Wed May 7 16:56:47 EDT 1997
    From: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Favorite song from March ---Bedlam Boys
Favorite song from Free For All ---Long Way Down (Look what the cat drug in)
Favorite line: Each line Penn writes is magical. How could I be possibly asked to choose one. Selecting a favorite song from each album was a big enough pain in the ass.
Comments: 'March' is without a doubt my favorite album of all time and the one that has influenced my own writing style. I listen to it at least once a week and I have done consistently since 1989 (the year of its release). Each song has melodies within melodies and the lyrics are brilliant, humble, and not preachy. I wish I could say that his music conjures up specific memories, but it does not. It merely acts as a soundtrack to my life.

  • Name: Mark D. Shevitz
    Date & Time: Tue Apr 15 10:02:55 EDT 1997
    From: Chicago
Favorite song from March ---Bedlam Boys
Favorite songs from Free For All ---Bunker Hill, By the Book
Favorite lines: "The only points of light are fires on Vermont" -- Bunker Hill
"What makes you think that just 'cause you dress bright means that you shine?" --Half Harvest
Comments: "Bedlam Boys" will always be a touchstone to my college days. It's a time that I can't go back to, and the song puts a into music a lot of the emotions I carry around in regards to that period in my life. I was listening to "By the Book" when I first met my fiancee. That song will always trigger great memories for me -- it captured that time perfectly. Lyrically, there's pretty much no one better that Penn. (And hey, the music isn't bad either!)

    Date & Time: Sun Apr 13 02:31:14 EDT 1997
    From: Athens, GA
Favorite song from March ---Bedlam Boys... and the rest of March, too
Favorite songs from Free For All ---Bunker Hill, Long Way Down (look what the cat drug in)... and the rest of Free For All, too
Favorite line (from "Bedlam Boys"): "So I just whispered to her underbreath/this love has suffered such a quiet death."
Comments: God, Bedlam Boys collides with something in my head every time I hear it. There is something about the song that aches. Most of the time I like Michael Penn because he's just so damn clever, but when it comes to Bedlam Boys, I like him because he's just so damn good.

  • Name: T-Bone
    Date & Time: Sat Apr 12 10:03:13 EDT 1997
    From: Chicago
Favorite songs from March ---Invisible, No Myth
Favorite songs from Free For All ---Slipping My Mind, Coal
Favorite line (from "Long Way Down (look what the cat drug in"): and if I wear apathy's crown don't call me highness, its a long way down.
Comments: The favorite line entry is a tough one....they are ALL so good! I remember when I first heard "No Myth" on the radio. I was immediatly turned on by his etheral vocals and twangy slide-like guitar style heard on that song. I picked up "March" the next day and returned home. Personally, it had been a musical dry spell up to that point, no good new bands/musicians. However, when I played "March" I was blown away. I knew I had found one of my all-time fav artists. Great page, Tom!

  • Name: Bryan Coffey
    Date & Time: Sat Apr 12 03:01:36 EDT 1997
From: I'm in DC, but from Cape Cod MA
    Favorite song from March ---Invisible
Favorite song from Free For All ---Strange Season
Favorite line (from "Free Time"): If I'm pale, it doesn't mean something's wrong. And if I'm blue, I just held my breath too long.
Comments: These two songs seem to me very understated and unsung, though complex, catchy, and brilliant on closer examination. "Strange Season" in particular probably has MP's most catchy melodies. "Invisible"'s lyrics are also some of my favorites because I can actually understand (and relate to) them.

Favorite song from March ---Bedlam Boys
Favorite song from Free For All ---Seen the Doctor
Favorite line (from "Bedlam Boys"): The Bedlam Boys!! Make some noise.....
Comments: The song "Bedlam Boys" appeals to the violent, spontaneous aspect of human nature. Party on!

  • Name: Sean Crawford
    Date & Time: Fri Apr 11 12:35:16 EDT 1997
From: All over... Germany, Alabama, Wisconsin
Favorite song from March ---Half Harvest
Favorite songs from Free For All ---Coal, Bunker Hill
Favorite line (from "Half Harvest"): "What makes you think that just cause you dress bright, it means that you shine?"
Comments: I love Half Harvest so much probably because it's the first song I learned to play on guitar. Or it was the first song I learned because I loved it so much. Who knows? Just a great, sparse song with terrific, heart-felt lyrics.

Favorite song from March ---This & That
Favorite song from Free For All ---Slipping My Mind
Favorite line (from "Slipping My Mind"): Should I remind you that this is the end of Camels and masking tape
Comments: Why these songs in particular??? Why not, they sound good, not that his other songs don't, they all sound good these just sound better, I guess. Can't wait for his next album to finally come out.visit a really great page even if it has nothing to do with Michael Penn

Favorite song from March ---Bedlam Boys

Comments: "Michael Penn"....hmmm...makes me wonder if he ever wrote anything under a pen name.

  • Name: Tom Loiacono
    Date & Time: 4/7/97 10:10 pm
    From: Ithaca, New York
Favorite song from March ---No Myth
Favorite song from Free For All ---Bunker Hill
Favorite line (from "Drained"): "...And run amok upon the lawn... sun comes up, and it just dawned on me."
Comments: No Myth just has such a great beat... somewhat unique and bouncy. Great lyrics... Bunker Hill is just warm and beautiful. Hard to explain, I suppose. :-)

Michael Penn has just astounded me ever since the first time I heard him, which was about 8 years ago when I was in 6th grade! (Wow... time flies...) I look forward to the release of his next album in June!
